How did Bethanie start his career?

Bethanie Mattek-Sands began her professional career in 1999. The first WTA tour where she played in the main draw was Amelia Island in April 2001. In the first match, Mattek lost to compatriot Jill Kreibas 6-4, 1-6, 3-6. In September of the same year, the 16-year-old American made her debut at the “Grand Slam tournaments in the US Open” and lost her first meeting to Alicia Molik. Returning to the “US Open” a year later and qualifying for the tournament, Bethany met with renowned countrywoman Jennifer Capriati in the first round and lost 0-6, 0-6 to her dry.

In January 2003, Bethanie Mattek-Sands won her first “ITF title,” winning the 50,000 singles and doubles in Fullerton. At the 2003 “US Open,” Mattek lost to Natalie Deshi in the starting mast. In July 2004, she took the 50,000th title in Schenectady. In August of the same year, the American managed to take the first trophy at the WTA tournaments in doubles. This event took place in Vancouver, where she shared the success with Abigail Spears. At the US Open, Bethany lost again in the first round, this time to Iveta Benesova.

Bethanie Mattek Sands Injury

In 2017, she suffered from a knee injury after winning a gold medal at Rio Olympics 2016.

The doubles season started very well for Mattek-Sands: together with Mirza, she won the tournament in Brisbane, where Makarova and Vesnina were beaten 6-2, 6-3 in the final. Then Bethany returned to a pair with a constant partner Shafarzhova; they became the winners of the Australian Open.

Bethany then, along with Shelby Rogers, helped the national team in the Fed Cup against Germany. The “Masters semifinals followed this in Indian” Wells, where she and Shafarzhova lost to Chan Yun-Yan and Martina Hingis 6-7 (7), 5-7. The next victory followed in April on clay in Charleston with a victory over Lucia Gradetskaya and Katerina Sinyakova.

Despite unsuccessful performances at the Masters in Madrid and Rome, which ended in losses in the first round, Mattek-Sands and Shafarzhova won the French Open, defeating Australian tennis players Ashley Barty Casey Dellacqua 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

However, at Wimbledon, the opportunity to issue the Grand Slam in doubles was cut short when Bethany suffered a severe knee injury in the second round of Wimbledon singles against Sorana Kirste. She was out of action for the rest of the season.
