Dalvin Cook played football representing Miami Central later in his sophomore year. Cook waited until sophomore as he believed he stood no chance against senior running back, Devonta Freeman who guided Central to a Class 6A state title in 2010. Cook trained under coach Telly Lockette.
As a junior, Cook lined up at running back while his best friend, Joseph Yearby, played wildcat quarterback on running downs. Then in his senior year, Cook had 34 touchdowns on 177 carries, intercepting three passes as he rushed for a county-best 1940 yards.

The Rivals ranked Dalvin Cook as a five-star recruit, ranking as the second-best all-purpose back in his class. Cook was considering Clemson University; however, he changed to Florida.
From 2014 to 2016, Cook played for the university and trained under coach Jimbo Fisher. Cook was entitled MVP of the 2014 ACC Championship Game after setting a career-high 177 yards on 31 carries and one rushing touchdown.
