As per Wikipedia, Paul is a versatile footballer eligible for defense and midfield. In 1996, he began his soccer career at Clemson University, where he played for one year. After his first year, a Canadian decided to sign a deal with the Toronto Lynx while still attending York University.

He was seen by a scout from Werder Bremen and purchased from the squad after one season with the Lynx, where he played alongside fellow Canada national teammate Dwayne De Rosario, who led the team in scoring with eight goals and two assists.

Paul made his first appearance in August 2000, scoring in the opening game against Energie Cottbus, after spending two and a half seasons in the reserves.

During the 2001–02 season, Paul established himself as a regular in Bremen’s first team, and he continued to do so in the 2002–03 season. His contribution led Bremen to win the Bundesliga in 2003–04.

After a successful time at Bremen, he left Germany and moved to England. According to BBC, he joined the north London club Tottenham Hotspur in May 2005. The Spurs signed him because he was a multi-functional player and could play in multiple positions.

He played a key role in the 2005–06 season as Spurs slightly missed out on a Champions League spot, but his chances were curtailed when full-back Pascal Chimbonda arrived at White Hart Lane.

Nevertheless, Paul had a goal in his name, which he scored in a London derby match against West Ham United in the 2006-07 season. By netting a ball in the opposition’s side in injury time, he helped the Spurs win a game by 4-3.

He had barely played in the first squad until that point in the season. His other goals for the Spurs came in the league versus Manchester City and the FA Cup versus Leicester City.

On January 31, 2008, he was sent to Fulham on loan for the rest of the 2007-08 season. Paul made his Fulham debut against Middlesbrough on February 9, 2008, in a 1–0 defeat. On December 21, 2008, his contract was mutually ended after returning to White Hart Lane.

After leaving the north London side, he returned to Bundes Liga to sign with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he played alongside his fellow international Rob Friend.

Paul made his international debut on August 17, 1997, versus Iran and has been a consistent starter for the Canadian national team for nearly ten years.

He was a national squad member for 84 caps, scoring seven goals. Until Julian De Guzman exceeded his mark in 2015, Paul was the most capped Canadian of all time.

On June 1, 2007, he was selected captain of the squad for a friendly against Venezuela, and he remained captain for the rest of his international career, including the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

On March 20, 2013, he declared his retirement as a player at 35, and he was named into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in May 2017.
