Heather Van Norman Early Life

Heather Van Norman attended Minnesota high school while growing up in the United States. She then transferred to New Orleans high school, where she graduated in the early 1990s.

She also earned her master’s degree from Louisiana State University. Norman began her career as a freshman track athlete at the University of Minnesota, where she was voted Freshman Track Athlete of the Year in 1988.

Heather Van Norman was a six-time All-American sprinter for LSU from 1989 to 1995, winning three consecutive NCAA outdoor titles from 1991 to 1993, two indoor national titles in 1991 and 1993, and both indoor and outdoor SEC crowns in 1993 and 1995.

Her coaching career began at Rice, where she spent two years as an assistant coach before moving to Atlanta to work for Georgia Tech for four years.

Van Norman was named head coach at Tulane in 2002, and during the next seven years, he led the Green Wave to 16 NCAA bids and 44 regional trips. Van Norman focused on squad depth and recruitment during her debut season with the Green Wave.

She sought a bigger commitment for 2004 after finishing sixth in the Conference USA Indoor Championships and tenth in the Outdoor Championships in 2003. The young Green Wave improved by nearly 50 points in the two league championships despite having just five seniors on the squad in 2004.

Van Norman has coached one All-American, Gloria Asumnu, as well as 144 all-conference nominees who have won 14 Conference USA individual titles in a variety of events. Her teams also excelled in the classroom, with 70 members of her squad making the C-USA Academic Honor Roll, as well as a Capital One Academic All-District award winner and a C-USA Post Graduate Scholarship winner.

In 1991, she helped set an American record in the 4x200m relay, and in 1992, she won the SEC indoor 400m run and qualified for the United States Olympic Trials in New Orleans.
