Bethanie Mattek-Sands began her professional career in 1999. The first WTA tour where she played in the main draw was Amelia Island in April 2001. In the first match, Mattek lost to compatriot Jill Kreibas 6-4, 1-6, 3-6. In September of the same year, the 16-year-old American made her debut at the “Grand Slam tournaments in the US Open” and lost her first meeting to Alicia Molik.
