Frye began his professional career after the New York Knicks selected him with the eighth overall choice in the 2005 NBA draft. During the 2005–06 season, he had two games with a season high of 30 points. In addition, Frye was again named to the NBA All-Rookie first team in 2005–06, finishing fifth in scoring.
Frye was transferred to the Portland Trail Blazers on June 28, 2007, and wore the number 7 jersey. On July 14, 2009, Frye agreed to a two-year, $3.8 million contract with the Phoenix Suns. Frye signed a new five-year, $30 million contract with the Suns on July 8, 2010, after declining his contract option.
Frye later signed a rumored four-year, $32 million contract with the Orlando Magic on July 14, 2014. However, Frye’s first season with the Magic was a letdown on the court, as he had his lowest point and rebound totals per game since his final season in Portland.
