His football career began in South Pointe, where he played quarterback after the defense and back in defense. While on the team for his senior year, he helped his school achieve a perfect 15-0 record. He had a record number of 23 touchdowns, ran 1,331 meters, and passed the highest number of yards, all of which he achieved in his final year of high school. He was awarded many awards for his prowess on the field and his performance on the track, all of which contributed to his being ranked 2nd in the list of potential high school graduates in South Carolina in 2009.
Of the four universities he had been looking at, Gilmore chose to go to South Carolina University as much as possible to stay as close to home as possible. While playing college football, he was assigned a cornerback position, which was rarely given to a freshman. He won that title with 52 tackles and nine worlds in one year. This earned him recognition in the football community.
