Career
Yazoo County High School was his alma mater. For the Panthers, he was a three-year starter as a quarterback. He rushed for 1,292 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior, passing for 1,184 yards and nine touchdowns. Gainwell committed to play collegiate football at Memphis over offers from Ole Miss and Tulane during the summer before his senior year.
He threw for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior and ran for 1,834 yards and 32 scores. Gainwell was voted Mr. Football in Class 3A after leading the Panthers to a 14–1 record and a berth in the state championship game. Gainwell concluded his high school career with 3,682 throwing yards and 32 touchdowns, as well as 4,730 rushing yards and 75 touchdowns, as well as one kickoff return for a touchdown.
