Lucas Radebe began his career with the ICL Birds (1987–1988) of the now-defunct Bophuthatswana Soccer League when he was discovered by talent scouts and acquired by the Kaizer Chiefs in 1989.
He has only never played the striker or referee positions on the field of play. The tall and slender footballer began his career as a goalie before moving to central midfield and later central defense.
In 1994, he signed with the English side Leeds United. Lucas became famous among the Leeds fans after playing multiple seasons with the team and made captain for the 1998–99 season. They finished 4th that season and got qualified for UEFA Cup next season.
During the 1999-2000 season, his contribution guided Leeds to 3rd place and qualified for the following season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL).
He carried his team to the UCL semi-final but unfortunately lost to Valencia. Nevertheless, Leeds’ journey to 2000-01 UCL was a remarkable moment for the fans. Lucas was named the FIFA Fair Play Award in 2000.
Lucas Radebe left professional football after the 2005 season. However, on the 2nd of May 2005, Leeds staged a testimonial for him at Elland Road, which drew an attendance of 37,886.
International Career
His international debut came in a match against Cameroon in 1992 at Kings Park Stadium. However, winning the African Cup of Nations in 1996 was one of his most significant achievements.
Lucas captained the national football team during the 1998 and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His last match was against England on May 22, 2003, and he won 70 caps for South Africa, scoring two goals.
