How did Sloane start his career?

In 2011 Sloane Stephens, won her first ITF title in a tournament in the $50,000 category in Reggio Emilia and then qualified for the first time at the French Open for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament but lost in the first round to Elena Baltacha. After reaching the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Carlsbad and the first advance into the third round of the US Open, in which she failed to Ana Ivanović, she was listed among the top 100 in the world for the first time at the end of the year and from then on received direct access to the Main fields of the Grand Slam tournaments.

In 2012, Sloane Stephens played her first full season on the WTA tour. In addition to two semi-finals in Strasbourg and Washington, she achieved her best result to date at a Grand Slam tournament in Paris with the fourth round, which she followed up with another third-round participation in Wimbledon. She also made it into the third round in Cincinnati and at the US Open and wintered among the world’s top 50 for the first time.

At the beginning of 2013, Stephens had his final breakthrough on the WTA tour. After a quarter-final in Brisbane and a semi-final in Hobart, she stormed into the semi-finals of the Australian Open and prevailed against Serena Williams in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Wiktoryja Azarenka.

Sloane Stephens was also convinced at the subsequent Grand Slam tournaments and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where, with Marion Bartoli, also only lost to the later winner and the fourth round at the French Open and US Open. In Cincinnati, she moved into the round of 16 after defeating Maria Sharapova, as well as in Toronto and Beijing. Due to the consistently good performance at major tournaments, Stephens finished the season at an eleventh place in the world rankings.

Junior career and first years on the WTA tour: 2007 to 2010

As a junior, Sloane Stephens won the renowned Trofeo Bonfiglio in 2009, reached the semi-finals in the junior singles of the French Open, and then achieved her highest position in the junior tennis world rankings with fifth place. In 2010, she triumphed alongside Timea Babos in the junior doubles competitions of the French Open, the US Open, and Wimbledon.

In 2007 Sloane Stephens gained her first experience at smaller tournaments in Brazil on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour. She won her first ITF double title at the side of Christina McHale in 2008 in Wichita. In the same year, she made her debut in the qualifying tournament of the US Open after she had received a wild card from the US Tennis Association and lost there in the second round. In the years that followed, Stephens had regular opportunities to compete in the qualifying tournaments of major American WTA tournaments.

In 2010 she managed to move into the main field for the first time in Indian Wells and her first win against Lucie Hradecká straight away, before losing to Wera Swonarjewa in the second round.

Fed Cup

In 2012, Sloane Stephens made his debut in a 5-0 playoff success over Ukraine for the United States’ Fed Cup team. Since then she has played twelve games in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win seven (individual balance 6: 4). In 2008 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Kristie Ahn and Christina McHale. In the final, in which they did not get a chance, they beat the team from Great Britain 2-0.
