Bill led the Portland Trail Blazers to an NBA championship in 1977 after being picked with the first overall pick in the 1974 NBA draft, winning the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in the process.

He captured a second NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 1986. In 1993, Bill was honored by being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition, the NBA selected him for the 50th and 75th-anniversary teams. He also played for the Los Angeles Clippers between 1979 and 1985.

The American men’s national basketball team chose him to represent the USA at the 1970 FIBA World Championships at 17, fresh out of high school, in the summer of 1970. Finally, in 1990, Bill officially retired from professional basketball, and currently, he is working as a television sportscaster.
