Todd Graham Career

According to Wikipedia, Todd Graham started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Poteet High School in Mesquite, where he grew up.

He went on to teach at Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and Allen High School in Allen, Texas, before joining Rich Rodriguez’s West Virginia University linebackers staff in 2001.

He was promoted to defensive co-coordinator the following season. Steve Kragthorpe hired him as the defensive coordinator at Tulsa in 2003, and he helped the Golden Hurricane win two bowl games in three seasons.

Todd Graham established one of the top defensive groups in Conference USA and the country before leaving for his first head coaching job after his third year at Tulsa.

On January 1, 2006, he was named Rice’s head coach. Rice completed the biggest turnaround of the 2006 season after he arrived, ending 7–5 and receiving a call to the New Orleans Bowl, the school’s first bowl game since 1961.

Todd was voted Conference USA Coach of the Year and was offered a large pay boost and contract extension by the Rice administration.

He left for Tulsa only a few days after signing the extension. After that, he only stayed at Rice for a year.

On January 12, 2007, Todd Graham was unveiled as Tulsa’s 27th head football coach. Todd Graham was the second-highest-paid coach in Conference USA in 2010, after SMU’s June Jones, with a yearly salary of $1.1 million.

Tulsa finished with a 10–3 record in his final season, including a 28–27 shock of Notre Dame and a 62–35 victory over No. 24 Hawaii in the 2010 Hawaii Bowl.

Todd Graham was announced as Pittsburgh Panthers head coach on January 10, 2011. Unfortunately, he ushered the team to a disappointing 6–6 regular season later that fall.

Naturally hence, Todd Graham didn’t have a good time in Pittsburgh. So, he decided to leave the team just less than a year after joining them.

After leaving Pittsburgh, Todd Graham joined Arizona State on December 14, 2011. In his first season at Arizona, they went 8–5, confirming their first winning season since 2007.

In addition, the 2012 Sun Devils won the season’s final three games for the first time since 1978 after defeating the Navy Midshipmen in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

Todd Graham had a great time at ASU, where he gained strong momentum and developed into a force. He guided them to the Pac-12 South title after beating UCLA and the rival University of Arizona during the 2013 season.

Todd Graham got the 2013 Pac-12 Coach of the Year Award to lead ASU to a Pac-12 South victory. ASU had another 10-win season in 2014, going 10–3 and finishing 12th in the final AP Poll and 14th in the final Coaches Poll.

His time got rough at ASU, and playing tactics began the downfall from the 2015 season. Unfortunately, the tendency persisted into the next two seasons. So, the 2017 season was his last as a head coach at Arizona.

Finally, he left the team and moved to the University of Hawaii. After a two-year hiatus from collegiate football, he was named the school’s 24th head football coach on January 21, 2020.

His first season at Hawaii got ended before it started. The spring football had to be canceled due to the COVID-19.

With a reduced training camp, the 2020 season got off to a late start. Despite this, his team began to gel after a rough start, including a dramatic upset over previously undefeated Nevada.

Todd Graham also became the first Hawaii coach to win his first game since Bob Wagner in 1987, with a victory over rival Fresno State. The victory earned him a place in the New Mexico Bowl, held in Frisco, Texas.

It was his 11th bowl participation in 13 years as a head coach. Hawaii finally defeated Dana Holgorsen’s Houston Cougars 28–14, giving him his 100th head coaching victory, sixth bowl triumph, and first victory over Holgorsen.

His second season began similarly to his first, with only one win over FCS Portland State and two defeats to Pac-12 opponents UCLA and Oregon State, with the defense surrendering more than 30 points in each game.

Todd’s next three-game also didn’t go as a plan. So it took some time for Hawaii to walk the road of glory.

Finally, they grabbed a 41-21 victory over longtime WAC rival New Mexico State. They’ve beaten 18th-ranked Fresno State next week with a 27–24.

Thus, Hawaii defeated a rated Bulldogs team for the third time, and it was the first win against a ranked team since 2010. It was also the first home triumph over the Bulldogs for the first time since 2007, snapping a six-game losing run.

Despite concluding with a 6–7 record, the team recaptured the Paniolo Trophy by defeating Wyoming 38–14, the team’s first victory in Laramie since 1991.

It also earned a second straight postseason berth in the Hawaii Bowl and a program-record fourth straight bowl game versus Memphis as a conditionally-eligible team, as the NCAA added an extra bowl game to accommodate all qualifying teams.

As per ESPN postings dated January 15, 2022, Todd Graham was accused of mistreating program participants regularly, therefore, he decided to resign after two seasons at the school.

His decision comes a week after former players testified in front of the state senate, alleging verbal abuse and other issues with the football program’s culture.
