High School Career

When Tyler first came to Marian Catholic, he faced future Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball starting guard Tracy Abrams in his first game as a freshman.

However, due to his height, he was neglected until late in the recruitment process by prominent basketball colleges. As a result, he was not heavily recruited until his senior year of high school in 2013–14.

Nevertheless, Tyler joined his senior season as one of the five favorites to succeed Illinois Mr. Basketball alongside Brunson, Okafor, Alexander, and Keita Bates-Diop.

During his senior year, Marian received the top seed in the Thornton sectional of the IHSA Class 4A competition.

College Career

During his freshman season, Tyler Ulis was named to the Wayman Tisdale Award Watch List and the 36-man 2014–15 Bob Cousy Award Preseason Watch List.

He immediately established a prestige as a game-changer whose assistances aren’t always visible in the numbers.

On March 12, 2016, Tyler scored 25 points and delivered four assists in the 2016 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals against Georgia during his sophomore season.

The point guard achieved a career-high 30 points in the finals versus regular season co-champion Texas A&M on March 13. Thus, he was awarded MVP of the competition.

Professional Career

He revealed his desire to forego his last two seasons of eligibility and join the 2016 NBA draft at the end of his sophomore season. So, on July 7, 2016, Phoenix Suns drafted him. Thirty-four overall and entered the team for the 2016 NBA Summer League.

Tyler made his Suns debut on October 26 versus the Sacramento Kings and scored 2 points, a rebound, an assist, a steal, and a block in 13 minutes of play, but unfortunately, they lost the game.

So, on June 30, 2018, the Suns released him, and he moved to the Golden State Warriors on September 24. However, the Warriors withdrew him as well on October 12.

Immediately after his release, he joined Chicago Bulls but couldn’t make his debut and got waived again on October 15.

So, he joined Windy City Bulls of the NBA G League on a two-way contract. On December 27, Tyler was released by the Bulls. On September 24, 2019, he joined the Sacramento Kings and got waived by them on October 20.

Finally, he joined the Santa Cruz Warriors in October 2021. Nonetheless, Tyler was waived on November 4 without making his debut for the team.
