Edward James Orgeron Jr. is an American football coach, professionally known as Ed Orgeron. Orgeron was the head football coach at LSU (Louisiana State University) from 2016 to 2021.

Orgeron also coached at the University of Mississippi from 2005 to 2007, including a head coach at the USC (University of Southern California).

Ed Orgeron Early Life and Background

Born on July 27, 1961, Ed Orgeron hails from Larose, Louisiana. Orgeron holds American Nationality and comes from a Cajun ethnic background. He is a Christian by religion, and his astrological sign is Leo.

Orgeron is the son of Edward “Be Be” Orgeron Sr. and his wife, Cornella “Co Co” Orgeron. He attended and graduated from South Lafourche High School. For college, Orgeron committed to Louisiana State University.

While in college, he played football and assumed the Defensive lineman position. In 1979, he played for LSU and later transferred to Northwestern State.

Coaching Career

Before Ed Orgeron started a career path in coaching, he was an American football player for the LSU and Northwestern State University.

After graduation, Orgeron started working as an assistant with his alma mater. Later in 1985, he moved to McNeese State University.

In 1998, he moved to the University of Miami as the defensive line coach. Before returning to LSU as the head coach, Orgeron worked with several universities gathering skills and experience, including Arkansas, Miami, Syracuse, Ole Miss, New Orleans Saints, Tennessee, and more. 

In his dismissal by Miami in 1992, he captioned

“Yes [my dismissal was necessary]. It led to a turnaround in my lifestyle. That’s something that had to be done in my life, where I just [could feel] comfortable with what I’m doing today.”

After working and switching to several universities, Orgeron returned to LSU as the defensive coach in 2014. However, only in 2016 was he appointed the head coach.

In 2019, his coaching helped the team win the 2019 SEC title. Further, Orgeron was named AP Coach of the Year in 2019.

Although he is a coach, he has also appeared in the 2009 film The Blind Side and the season 1 episode of the TV series Young Rock. Additionally, Orgeron was a defensive line coach when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson played in Miami.

Orgeron has received several awards throughout his career, including National Recruiter of the Year (2004), Home Depot Coach of the Year (2019), Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, and many more.

Ed Orgeron has had a very successful career. He has an estimated net worth of over $10 Million. In his LSU coaching years, he was the second-highest-paid coach. Orgeron was paid an annual salary of $9,012,917.

In 2020, Orgeron signed a six-year contract with the Tigers for an annual salary of $6 Million. Unfortunately, he was fired in late 2021; however, his contract still stands, and he will be receiving the salary until 2026.

Ed Orgeron was a married man until 2020. His ex-wife, Kelly, filed a divorce following an incident regarding not responding to an assault when he served as the head coach for the Tigers. The sexual harassment case led Orgeron to leave the program in late 2021.

Before Orgeron met Kelly, he was married to Colleen Orgeron. The pair were together until 1994 and had a son, Tyler Orgeron, before moving on.
