After playing for four-holiday bowls, Whittingham made his first appearance as a running back and linebacker.
After graduating from BYU, Kyle started playing as a linebacker for Denver Gold and New Orleans Breakers.
Whittingham started his coaching career in 1985 after he graduated from BYU in the 1985 and 1986 seasons. After being named defensive coordinator at the University of Utah, Kyle coached there for a season.
Kyle coached five seasons for Idaho State and later joined the University of Utah as a defensive coach alongside his father Fred Whittingham.
