Sam Hartman accepted a scholarship to Wake Forest University and won the first quarterback position at the pre-season camp. He started the season’s opening game against Tulane and was one of five new players to start the season in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.

He was 31-for-51 past Tulane, throwing 378 yards and leading them to win over time. He has become a true newcomer to start the season’s opening game as a player back in school history. For the first three games of the season, Hartman led all the youngsters in the country through crime yards and made two or more touchdown passes per game.

After extensive competitions in the spring and autumn camps, Hartman became a backup quarterback as the second player in 2019 after Jamie Newman, who appeared in four games, thus keeping the red shirt of the season. He saw his first action against Louisville on October 12, when he took the reins in the fourth quarter following 38-55.

He also won first place as a redshirt sophomore in 2020, was appointed team captain, and played in all nine games. Against North Carolina, Hartman combined for 429 passing yards and four touchdowns in a 53-59 loss.

In 2021, Hartman led his team to an 8-0 record, the best start in school history. He received international honors following a military game, in which Hartman combined for 458 yards for the top pass and five touchdowns.
