Lizette Cabrera’s Early Life

Lizette  Cabrera was born in Townsville on December 19, 1997, and was raised there by her parents, Ronnie and Maria. She was raised alongside her two other siblings, sister Izabo and brother Carl. Lizette Cabrera began playing tennis as a child and later moved to Brisbane to train at the National Academy. She made her professional debut in 2016 and won her maiden championship in September of that year on a professional tour.

 

Lizette Cabrera’s Professional career

Lizette Cabrera was ranked 1062 at the start of 2016. In September of 2016, she won her first professional title. Her singles ranking at the end of the year was 257.

Lizette Cabrera entered the Hobart International as a wildcard and won her maiden WTA Tour match against Misaki Doi in the first round. Cabrera made her senior Grand Slam main-draw debut at the Australian Open thanks to a wildcard. However, she was eliminated in the first round by Donna Vekic.  Cabrera qualified for the Guangzhou International in September and advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating world No. 30 Anett Kontaveit in the second round. She finished the year with singles upgrading her ranking to 135.

Lizette Cabrera was eliminated in the first round of the Hobart International and the Australian Open the following week by Beatriz Haddad Maia. However, she advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACT Clay Court International in March of 2018. Cabrera qualified for the Copa Colsanitas WTA Tour event in April. In May, she qualified for the second round of the French Open, and in June, she qualified for the second round of Wimbledon qualifying. Cabrera made her main-draw debut at the US Open after obtaining a wildcard. Ajla Tomljanovi defeated her in the first round. Her singles ranking was 230 at the end of the season.

Lizette Cabrera was eliminated from the Brisbane International and Australian Open qualifying rounds. However, she advanced to the Burnie International quarterfinals. She competed in the ITF Circuit around the United States in March, with mixed results, before heading to Europe. Cabrera and Julia Grabher won the doubles title in Caserta, Italy, in May, and Cabrera advanced to the Manchester Trophy quarterfinals, where eventual champion Magda Linette defeated her.

Lizette Cabrera won the Challenger de Granby in Canada in July, her first title in three years and her most significant date. Her ranking climbed back into the top 200 in the world as a result of this. Unfortunately, Cabrera was eliminated in the final round of qualifying at the US Open.

Lizette returned to Australia in September and won both the singles and doubles events at the Darwin Tennis International. She won the Bendigo International in October and advanced to the City of Playford International final the following week. Cabrera’s performance propelled her to a new career-high of 131, surpassing her previous best of 134 recorded in October 2017. She finished the year ranked 131 in singles.

Lizette Cabrera began 2020 by reaching her first WTA quarterfinal since 2017; however, she was defeated by Elena Rybakina at the Hobart International. In addition, she was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open. Finally, at the Burnie International, she advanced to the quarterfinals. Cabrera’s career-high singles rating of 119 reached on February 3, 2020, due to these accomplishments.
