Abmas competed in the Amateur Athletic Union for 3-D Sports. Max won multiple scholarships from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marist, and Oral Roberts after graduating from high school.

He made a commitment to play for Oreal Roberts University. Max was a consistent starter as a freshman, averaging 14.4 points per game and earning Summit League All-Newcomer Team accolades. Max had appeared in twenty-eight games by the start of his sophomore year. He had a 3.2-rebound, 3.8-assist, and 1.5-steal per game average. By the end of his sophomore year, Abmas was averaging 24.6 points per game.

Max got the Lou Henson Award in his sophomore year. He was selected the Most Valuable Player of the Summit League Tournament. Abmas became the first player since Stephen Curry in the 2008 NCAA Tournament to score at least 25 points in each of the first three rounds of a single tournament.
