Max Johnson started his new season as the club’s third quarterback before being named a team starter ahead of LSU’s game against Florida. At the start of his first career, he threw for 239 yards and hit three touchdowns to win 37-34, defeating the Gators ranked sixth and was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
In the next game, Johnson secured a new LSU record of 435 yards with three touchdowns and a touchdown while chasing 45 yards and a two-touch win over 53-48, defeating Ole Miss. In his first season at LSU, Johnson finished 88 out of 150 attempts to pass 1,069 yards, eight touchdowns, and one touchdown.
