Mike is a married man. Wendy Jones is the wife of the former Lakers point guard. Mike and Wendy met when they were both 19 years old. She was also a previous student at Master’s College, where she was a standout volleyball player. Wendy was a member of one of the most successful teams in school history, with her side winning 35 games in 1993 and 31 in 1996. Mike Penberthy tried out for the Indian Pacers, but due to a ruptured right hamstring, he was unable to make the squad. Later, he joined the Idaho Stampede of the Continental Basketball Association. He later joined the Hamburg Tigers of Germany. Penberthy used to work as a forklift driver at Turk Terk, a firm run by his cousin, during the NBA lockout in the summer of 1998.

Mike joined the CBA team Quad City Thunder the following autumn but was released due to an injured right ankle. The six-foot-three Mike Penberthy played for the Venezuelan team Cocodrilos de Caracas from April to June 1999. Mike appeared in 56 NBA games for the Lakers, averaging 4.9 points, 1.3 assists, as well as 1.2 rebounds per game while playing an average of 15.4 minutes per game.

He played basketball in Italy and Germany after leaving the Lakers in 2001, and he appeared in the ULEB Cups in 2005, 2006, and 2007. He won the German Cup in 2006 with Alba Berlin. He joined with the ABA’s Los Angeles Slam four years later. Penberthy began his coaching career as the shooting coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2014-15 season. During the 2018-19 season, he held a similar job with the New Orleans Pelicans.
