Early life

Nah’Shon Hyland was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 14, 2000, as Nah’Shon Lee “Bones” Hyland. Marshay Hayland and her spouse have two children together. Tykee, Hyland’s older brother, is his best friend. Nah’Shon Hyland attended Virginia Commonwealth University after graduating from St. Georges Tech in 2019.

High school career

After watching his older brother, Tykee, play at the park, Hyland began playing basketball. Next, Hyland went to Middletown, Delaware’s St. Georges Technical High School. Unfortunately, his 11-month-old cousin and grandmother died in a house fire during his junior year. Hyland managed to flee by jumping from his second-floor bedroom, but he had a torn patellar tendon, which forced him to sit out for six months.

As a senior, Nah’Shon Hyland led his team to the state playoffs, averaging 26.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 3.4 steals per game. He was selected Delaware Player of the Year and was named to the first team of the Delaware All-State squad.

College career

Nah’Shon Hyland set a freshman season-high with 21 points and five three-pointers in a 91–63 win over St. Bonaventure on January 18, 2020. As a freshman, he was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team after averaging nine points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. With 63 three-pointers, he set a freshman record for the program, shooting 43.4 percent from the three-point range.

On November 25, Hyland made his sophomore season debut, scoring 23 points and shooting five three-pointers in an 85–69 win over Utah State. Then, on December 9, he scored 30 points in a win over North Carolina A&T, shooting 7-of-12 from three-point range, and six days later, he scored a career-high 31 points in a win over Western Carolina.

Nah’Shon Hyland had 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 73–68 win over Dayton in the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinals on March 5, 2021. As a sophomore, Hyland was voted Atlantic 10 Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. He declared for the NBA draft on April 17, 2021, foregoing his remaining college eligibility.

 

Professional career

The Denver Nuggets selected Hyland with the 26th overall choice in the 2021 NBA draft on July 29, 2021, making him VCU’s first draft pick in 11 years.
