Nicolás Otamendi began playing football in 1995 and made his professional debut in Primera División, where he played for Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield on 10 May 2008. Otamendi contributed to a 2–1 home victory over Rosario Central for the Clausura tournament in his debut match.
During the 2009 Apertura, he scored his first professional goal in a 3–1 win against Arsenal de Sarandí. Otamendi also made his international club debut in the Copa Sudamericana in the same season.
