Club Career

Bruno went to local club S.L. Benfica’s youth system at 11. On September 22, 2012, he made his professional debut in a 2–0 away win over C.D. Aves in the Segunda Liga for the reserves while still a junior. 

Bruno Varela was sent out on loan to Real Valladolid for a season on August 29, 2015. 

He only participated in one official game for the Spaniards during his stint, a 1–3 Segunda División home loss to RCD Mallorca on the last matchday, after being barred by Chelsea’s 2nd choice Kepa Arrizabalaga (then Athletic Bilbao youth product).

After spending the 2016–2017 season at Vitória, Benfica bought him back in July 2017. He debuted on 5 August, starting in the 3–1 win against Vitória in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. 

A goalkeeper made his UEFA Champions League debut on September 12, in a 1–2 group stage home defeat to CSKA Moscow. 

On January 26, 2019, Bruno was loaned to Dutch giant AFC Ajax for the 2019–2020 season with the option to buy. 

He made his official debut for Ajax on January 22, 2020, in a 7–0 home win over SV Spakenburg in the KNVB Cup round of 16. His first league match was a 2–1 away loss to F.C. Groningen.

On August 19, 2020, he returned to Portugal and signed a four-year contract with Vitória de Guimarães.

International Career

He competed for Portugal in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2013. He also competed in the 2014 Toulon Tournament for the under-20 team, finishing third overall.

During the 2016 Summer Olympics, he was the clear favorite, eventually reaching the quarter-finals.
