Early Life

Damir Kreilach was born on April 16, 1989, in Vukovar (Vukovar-Sirmium), Croatia’s most eastern county. Damir’s father was a shoemaker who later joined the war to fight for Croatian independence. He was only four years old at the time.

So Damir Kreilach’s childhood was not easy. As a result of the Croatian war of independence, he and his family were forced to relocate from their original hometown of Vukovar. Finally, Kreilach’s family arrived in a Croatian Adriatic Sea coastal town.

Professional Career

Damir Kreilach, a natural talent, began his playing career at the age of six. He used to play football in Opatija’s streets. NK Opatija, a third-tier Croatian club at the time, noticed the young talent and signed him.

The child prodigy did not have to wait long to begin his professional career, as he began playing for Rijeka, a first division club in Croatia, on April 12, 2008. He appeared in 128 games for the club, scoring 19 goals.

In the 2011-12 season, he became his club’s leading scorer, with 9 goals. Then, in 2013, he moved to Union Berlin, a German second division club, where he scored 33 goals in 147 matches over five seasons.

The former Union Berlin player joined the MLS club Real Salt Lake in 2018 for a fee of €1.25 million. RSL star went on to score 15 goals and provide 9 assists in his debut season with the club.

Finally, the RSL midfielder was awarded the club’s golden boot for 2018. Claret and Cobalt, impressed by the Croatian midfielder, extended his contract until the 2022 season, with an option for 2023.

Kreilach, a Croatian midfielder, has represented his country at the U-19 and U-21 levels. However, the former Rijeka star was never given the opportunity to play for Croatia’s senior team.

In 2020, Damir Kreilach was Real Salt Lake’s leading goal scorer, with eight goals and one assist in 21 appearances. Throughout the season, Kreilach played 1,770 minutes and captained Real Salt Lake in five matches.

In 2019, in his second season with RSL, Kreilach started all 34 of his appearances, including two playoff games. In 2,819 minutes, Kreilach had seven goals and five assists.

In 2018, in his first season with RSL, Kreilach led the team in goals with 15 (12 regular seasons, 3 postseasons), earning the club’s Golden Boot. Kreilach appeared in 33 matches for the club, starting 31 of them, and provided 9 assists in 2,784 minutes of action.

In 2017-2018, Kreilach played 71 minutes in his final match for FC Union Berlin, a 1-1 draw against Arminia Bielefeld on February 5, 2018. In 147 appearances for the club, he finished with 33 goals and 18 assists.
