Bivol was a decorated amateur, earning two world titles at the junior (U-17) level as well as a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2008 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. Career

In both 2012 and 2014, he won the Russian amateur boxing championships. In November of 2014, Dmitry Bivol made his professional debut. He knocked out his first six opponents.

On May 21, 2016, Dmitry Bivol won the interim WBA light-heavyweight title by majority decision over previously undefeated Felix Valera. Dmitry Bivol won in an overwhelming fashion, knocking Clarkson down twice in the first round before dropping him again midway through round four with a short right hand. Despite Clarkson’s efforts, the bout was stopped by the referee, giving Bivol a TKO victory.

Following his victory over Clarkson, Dmitry Bivol sought to confront WBA (Regular) champion Nathan Cleverly. Dmitry Bivol fought Cedric Agnew in a non-title battle on the undercard of Ward-Kovalev II. Agnew had already been defeated by Clarkson. Bivol won easily and forcefully once more, this time with a fourth-round TKO for the third time in a row. Agnew was knocked down in the first round.

Dmitry Bivol was Cleverly’s obligatory challenger as interim champion, but the WBA allowed Cleverly an exception to face Badou Jack, who overcame him. Following the retirement of WBA (Super) and unified champion Andre Ward, Jack decided to vacate his title, presumably to pursue one of Ward’s other vacant titles.
