A Mets team doctor found that the injury was a Grade III separation, a complete separation of the joint from the socket. As a result of this diagnosis, Tatís missed another 2008 season.

Although he missed the end of the season, Tatís was awarded the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year on October 23, 2008. Tatís played for the Mets from time to time in 2009 and 2010. His last Major League match was on July 4, 2010.

He also became the latest New York Met to wear the number 17 uniform, which was later disused as a token of respect for Keith. Hernandez wore it as a member of the Mets from 1983 to 1989.
