Early life

Gianluca Busio was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on May 28, 2002, to parents who had relocated from Italy. Dionne Busio, his mother, was quite supportive of him throughout his journey, which is remarkable in and of itself. Due to his father Alessandro, who was born in Brescia, Busio is of Italian descent and a citizen of the country. Gianluca Busio identifies as an African American because of his mother’s family.

Gianluca Busio has an older sister, Ilaria, and an older brother, Matteo, who plays soccer for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is Gianluca’s biggest inspiration. However, when it came to his schooling, he didn’t attend school physically and instead earned his diploma through an online high school program. Although he is already doing well in his sporting profession, his mother insisted on him getting a college education.

 

Club Career

Gianluca Busio’s story began in August 2017, when he was 15 years and 89 days old when Sporting signed him. He was and continues to be a one-of-a-kind individual. At barely over 16 years old, he made his first-team debut in a U.S. Open Cup match the following season, and his regular-season debut came later that year.

From there, it was all uphill. He’s only 19 years old, after all! Nevertheless, he has already appeared in 61 games, starting 39 of them, scoring nine goals, and assisting eight others at the age of 19.

Gianluca Busio, born in Greensboro, North Carolina, joined the Sporting Kansas City Academy in 2016. He previously played for the North Carolina Fusion. He became the youngest player to sign a Major League Soccer contract since D.C. United’s Freddy Adu in 2004 when he signed with Sporting Kansas City on August 25, 2017.

After signing with Swope Park Rangers, a United Soccer League club of Sporting Kansas City, Gianluca Busio made his professional debut on April 4 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks. He made his Major League Soccer debut for Sporting Kansas City on July 28 in a 3–2 loss to FC Dallas.

Gianluca Busio made his first league start for Sporting Kansas City on August 4 against the Houston Dynamo. In that match, they saw three red cards, eight yellow cards, and 28 total fouls. He gave his first professional assist to teammate Diego Rubio on a 74th-minute goal that proved to be the game-winner in a 1–0 tie. Busio was the third-youngest player in MLS history to start a game.

International career

His name was added to the U.S. squad for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil, which will take place in October of 2018. A substitute for Jackson Yueill in the 62nd minute of the USA’s CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Haiti, Busio made his senior national team debut on July 11, 2021.
