Early Life
Kirk Herbstreit attended Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, which is a Dayton suburb. As a senior quarterback of Elks, he was the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year. He was an excellent athlete, basketball player, and baseball player.
After John Cooper was hired as head coach in 1988, Kirk Herbstreit was the first to pledge to the Ohio State Buckeyes. From 1989 to 1993, Kirk Herbstreit was a four-year letter winner at Ohio State University as a quarterback. Herbstreit ultimately led the Buckeyes as a senior in 1992, after waiting his turn as a starter behind Greg Frey and Kent Graham.
The father of Kirk Herbstreit, Jim Herbstreit, had been a 1960 Ohio State team co-captain and, afterward, an assistant trainer for the Ohio State under Woody Hayes, along with the offensive tackle, Jim Tyrer.
