Max Purcell Career

In July 2016, Purcell qualified and won the Gimcheon Challenger in South Korea against Andrew Whittington of Australia. However, Purcell is ranked 762nd globally, leading him to become the second-lowest player to win the ATP Challenger in 16 years.  He finished the season at 324 in the world.

In 2017, Purcell received a wild card at a double event at the Australian Open, where he met Alex De Minaur. The two lost in the first round with two Spanish giants Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta. Purcell made the final of the Futures Tour in 2017, buying three titles. He completed the year number 277 in the world. In January, Purcell performed his private Grand Slam after first receiving the 2020 Australian Open.

Defeated by Jannik Sinner in the first round by straight sets. In that tournament, he paired with Luke Saville as a wild card in Men’s Doubles, where they reached the finals losing to 11-seeded American Rajeev Ram and Brit Joe Salisbury. Purcell got a chance to start the 2021 season at the 2021 Great Ocean Road Open, where he defeated Norbert Gombos with his first ATP victory. Purcell lost to Karen Khachanov in the second round. Purcell won his first opponent in the top 20 after beating World No. 16 and top seed Gaël Monfils in Eastbourne as Lucky Loser reached his first quarterfinal of the first ATP  and then recorded another victory with Andreas Seppi to earn his first semi-finalists. Another Italian, Lorenzo Sonego, defeated him. After this great competition, he won his second Challenger singles title, the 2021 Presidential Cup (tennis) at Nur Sultan. As a result, he was successful to enter the top 200 in the professional category in singles No. 190 on July 19, 2021.

At the 2020 Olympics, Purcell was replaced by Andy Murray’s last-minute replacement, who had been sidelined due to a leg injury. Purcell recorded his most significant career victory and more than 20 leading players for the first time, defeating the world no. 15 Félix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. Purcell also replaced Alex de Minaur in a double ceremony after being tested for COVID-19. Purcell teamed up with John Peers but lost in the first round.
