Michael Jerome Williams Jr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 28, 1986. His biological father’s name is Michael Jerome Williams Sr. and his mother’s name is Denise Oher. His parents gave birth to 11 other children. Oher’s parents did not give much assistance to their children. Denise was hooked to crack cocaine, and Michael Sr. was regularly in prison. As a consequence, Oher was often homeless and in and out of foster care.

He also struggled in school, repeating first and second grades and attending 11 different schools over the course of his first nine years. While Oher was studying in high school, his estranged father was slain.

Turning Point

Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy finally took in the young boy when he was 16, and the Tuohys became Oher’s primary caretakers when he was 17. Oher began to shine in football during his junior year. He was the starting left tackle on the varsity football team by the beginning of his senior year.

He rapidly established himself as a top football prospect in Tennessee, earning many scholarship offers from Division 1 institutions.

College Career

In 2004, Michael Oher had a lot of success. He was a well-known football player who was named to USA Today’s first-team All-America squad and was picked to participate in the US Army All-America Bowl. After receiving offers from Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, and NC State, he chose a scholarship offer from the University of Mississippi.

NFL Career

The Baltimore Ravens picked Oher 23rd overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. In Michael’s debut season with the Ravens, he started all 16 games and helped the team make the playoffs. During the 2012-13 season, Oher was an integral part of the Ravens’ run to Super Bowl XLVII. The Super Bowl was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, and featured the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers.

In a close game, Oher and his teammates won the championship, scoring 34 points to the 49ers’ 31. “I came so far—from nothing to a Super Bowl championship,” Oher told ABC News after his remarkable victory.

The Blind Side

Michael Lewis’s book The Blind Side, published in 2006, chronicled Oher’s journey from foster youngster to collegiate football standout. Sandra Bullock appeared in the 2009 film adaptation of the novel. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year.
