Brate was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on May 21, 2014, to a three-year, $1.53 million contract that included a $3,000 signing bonus. Brate battled Ian Thompson for a roster position as a backup tight end during training camp. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dismissed Brate on August 30, 2014, however, he was signed to their practice squad the next day. Brate was promoted to the active roster by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 25, 2014.
