    In February 2017, Nicholas was bought by the Mumbai Indians team for the 2017 Indian Premier League for INR 30 lakhs but did not play any game throughout the season. Pooran played for Islamabad United in 2017 in the Pakistan Super League as he was replaced by Ben Duckett of England for United. He joined the team before the playoffs. He made his debut against the Karachi Kings. Pooran was not sold at the 2018 IPL auction after setting his base price at INR 50 lakhs. In October 2018, he was named to the Sylhet Sixers team, following the 2018-19 Bangladesh Premier League framework.

    He was the leading scorer in the tournament, with 379 runs in 11 games. In December 2018, Nicholas was bought by Kings XI Punjab at the 2019 Indian Premier League player auction for 4.2 crores ($ 590,000). Pooran had a fantastic IPL 2020 season as he scored 353 runs in 14 games. He also became the fourth of six batsmen in the 2020 IPL season with 25 total wins per season. In February 2019, he was nominated for One Day International (ODI) for the West Indies for their series against England. He made his ODI debut in the West Indies against England on February 20, 2019. In April 2019, he was named to the West Indies team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. On July 1, 2019, in a match against Sri Lanka, Pooran hit his first 100 ODIs.

    He finished the tournament as the top scorer in the West Indies, with 367 runs in nine games. After the World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named Pooran as the team’s all-time leading scorer. In July 2019, Cricket West Indies awarded him a mid-contract contract for the first time, ahead of the 2019-20 season. He later became the vice-captain of the West Indies T20 international cricket team. He even captained the West Indies cricket team in a series of 5 20 20 international cricket matches against the Australian cricket team when the Caribbean team won 4 in one instead of the first 2020 game. International captain Kieron Pollard suffered a muscle injury during training.

    In November 2019, during the third ODI match against Afghanistan, Pooran was found guilty of tampering with football. Pooran pleaded guilty to four counts of T20I. In July 2021, he was selected for the West Indies team as vice-captain in the home series against Australia. With Kieron Pollard released from the first T20I, Pooran became the West Indies captain for the first time in the T20Is. He led the West Indies to a stunning 18-run victory over Australia in the first match of the T20I series. In September 2021, Pooran was named vice-captain of the West Indies team at the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
