Education and Early Life

Nirmal Purja graduated from the local school, and he joined the Brigade of Gurkhas in 2003. Later, he joined Special Boat Service in 2009. He was the first Gurkha to pass the selection of SBS.

He was once a member of elite special forces as a cold-weather warfare specialist. From that moment, he got the confidence to set his career in mountaineering.

He quit the military in 2018 and started focusing on mountaineering projects.

Career 

The first mountain he climbed was in 2012, Lobuche East, with no previous engineering experience. Later, he completed his first accent as an eight-thousander from the summit Dhaulagiri during the trip of 15 days only. Followed by Mt. Everest in 2016. 

He again climbed Mt. Everest with the occasion to 200 years of Gurkha service to the British Army. He was also appointed as a Member of Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for his high-altitude mountaineering performance.

The first winter ascent of K2:

The team of Nirmal Purja went to K2 in January 2021, the 16th of January. His team members were Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Geljen Sherpa, Pem Chiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, and Nirmal himself. They reached the top of K2 at local time 16:58. He was the only one with no supplemental oxygen to reach the top, and he is the first individual to do it.

As a record, he has climbed 14 mountains of more than 8,000 meters high above sea level.

They are all sufficiently independent from the neighboring peaks. He also holds the record for climbing K2 without supplemental oxygen in January. January is the most uncomfortable and most unfavorable month for climbing the high mountains.
