He played in the Northern Telecom Open as an amateur on 13 January 1991 and won the tournament by a stroke against Tom Purtzer and Bob Tway. On 21 February 1993, he played in the Buick Invitational of California, in which he won the tournament against Dave Rummells with a margin of 4 strokes.
