Early life

Club career

Ricky Alvarez debuted professionally with Vélez Sársfield in 2008. Ricky Alvarez suffered a knee cruciate ligament damage shortly after his debut, ending his first-team career. Due to the Copa Libertadores’ tight schedule, Vélez’s breakthrough with the squad came during the 2010 Clausura, when he was obliged to play mostly with reserves. In a 1–2 loss against River Plate at the Estadio Monumental, he scored his first goal. He appeared in 11 games and scored one goal during the competition.

Internazionale paid Vélez a €12.8 million transfer fee for 90 percent of his rights on July 5, 2011, and he joined the team. In the 2011 Supercoppa Italiana defeat Milan, he made his official debut for his club. Alvarez began to establish himself in the team under Claudio Ranieri’s tutelage and demonstrated his ability to play as a trequartista.

Ricky Alvarez scored his first Inter goal in a 3–2 comeback win over Catania in 2013. He scored two more goals against Atalanta on April 7, despite Inter losing 3–4 in the San Siro. Three days later, against Lazio, Alvarez scored his tenth goal for Inter.

On the day of the 2014 deadline, Sunderland signed Alvarez. Ricky Alvarez joined Sunderland on a season-long loan to make a move permanent if the club avoided relegation. On September 13, 2014, Alvarez made his Premier League debut.

Sunderland avoided relegation and met the contractual need to pay €10.5 million for Alvarez. However, due to a disagreement with Inter Milan over the player’s fitness, the club did not buy Alvarez. Sunderland had approached Inter after Alvarez’s injury in September, seeking permission to do surgery, but Inter had refused.

Ricky Alvarez was linked with a move to Sampdoria in the last days of December 2015, which was finally completed on January 4 the following year, with Alvarez signing a deal until June 30, 2016. For the second half of the 2015–16 season, he was also handed the number 25 shirt.

Ricky Alvarez signed a new three-year deal on June 24, 2016. By mutual consent, he officially canceled his contract with Sampdoria on July 11, 2018.

International career

Alvarez was called up to Argentina’s senior squad on August 18, 2011. In a friendly versus Venezuela on September 2, 2011, he made his debut. Alvarez played in another friendly four days later, this time against Nigeria. Finally, in the 2014 World Cup qualification match against Bolivia, he made another appearance.

Alvarez was called up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on June 2, 2014.
