As per Whitecaps FC, the defender played youth soccer with AFC Clayton in Manchester, England, from 2000 to 2004, before emigrating to Canada with his family in 2004.

Sam played for the Calgary Foothills Saints from 2004 to 2009 before spending two years with the Calgary Foothills Rapids (2009 to 2011).

The defender won three Calgary Minor Soccer Association tier-one championships and two Alberta provincial indoor crowns during his stint with Calgary Foothills. He also competed at the U-13 and U-16 levels for his home province of Alberta.

In 2011, he joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s youth academy. In the 2011-12 season, Sam started 23 of Whitecaps FC U-16 Residency’s 25 regular-season games, scoring one goal in a 5-0 win over California Development Academy on September 24.

In the 2012-13 season, he started 32 of 35 regular-season games for the team’s U-18 residency, scoring two goals. Similarly, a left-back made 18 appearances for Whitecaps FC U-18 Residency in the 2013-14 season, including 17 starts, and netted one goal.

In 2014, a young athlete played four games for the Vancouver Whitecaps at left-back, including one start against Toronto FC in a 2-1 victory on July 16.

Sam Adekugbe started seven of the ‘Caps’ first nine MLS games in 2015 before suffering an injury midway through the season.

He came back to end the season with nine MLS games, including a spot on the MLS Team of the Week following his first start of the season in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on March 14.

In the English Football League (EFL) Championship, Sam Adekugbe joined Brighton & Hove Albion FC on loan on July 15, 2016.

Sam made five first-team starts and appearances in all competitions, scoring a goal in the League Cup. In Premier League 2, he also made five starts for the club’s U-23 side.

In July 2017, a left-back was loaned to IFK Göteborg of the Swedish Allsvenskan for the remainder of the season.

According to Wikipedia, he signed a four-year contract with Eliteserien team Vlerenga on January 8, 2018. On March 12, he made his debut against Kristiansund. He would play 94 games for the Oslo club throughout 3.5 seasons.

Sam moved to the Turkish Süper Lig team Hatayspor on a three-year deal on June 18, 2021. On August 14, he made his debut against Kasmpaşa.

Sam might have competed internationally for England, Nigeria, or Canada. He was quoted in 2012 as claiming that he wished to play for England at Wembley Stadium. However, he has played for Canada at junior and senior levels.

In September 2013, Sam Adekugbe was called up to the Canada senior team for two friendly against Mauritania; however, he did not play in either match.
