Before the start of his new season, Riley was one of three UCLA arrests in China on suspicion of shoplifting ahead of their match against Georgia Tech. The arrested players were detained at their hotel for a few days until charges were dropped and players could leave the country.

On December 22, 2017, UCLA announced that Riley and Hill would remain suspended for the rest of the season but could join team practices and activities in December. 26.
