In the Cleveland area, he grew up in poor conditions and poverty in a one-room apartment above his father’s store, R and J Confectionery, in Glenville. He studied at a private Benedictine, paying a Roman Catholic High School fee. In 1999, his father died of cancer.

Called the “Rich Law of Paul” by the media, it was widely seen as swiping Paul with no graduation and working with high school student Darius Bazley who decided to work as a New Balance student rather than go to Syracuse.
Paul argued with the op-ed to Athletic that the law would prevent people from less respected backgrounds, people of color, and those who do not have the money to go to college to work as agents in the future so that NCAA executives have more control. However, the NCAA later withdrew from the change in the law.
