On June 24, 2011, at Dade County Auditorium in Miami, Florida, Florida, Sullivan Barrera defeated Frank Paines for the first time in his career, winning the WBA Federation and WBO Latino interim light heavyweight titles. Then, Barrera fought Karo Murat in an IBF eliminator in December 2015, with the winner becoming Sergey Kovalev’s mandatory challenger. Barrera had been scheduled to fight Artur Beterbiev and Igor Mikhalkin by the IBF, but agreements for both bouts fell through. So instead, Barrera pummeled Murat, dropping him in the fourth round and halting him in the fifth. At the time, Barrera and Kovalev were both signed to Kathy Duva’s promotional company, Main Events.

Sullivan Barrera then challenged Andre Ward, the former unified super middleweight champion. Ward was making the transition from light heavyweight to light heavyweight. Ward’s hometown Oracle Arena hosted the bout.

Sullivan Barrera fought Joe Smith Jr. for the WBC International light heavyweight title on July 15, 2017. In round 10, he won the battle and the title. He faced Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title on March 3, 2018, but was lost by TKO.

Barrera fought Jesse Hart on June 15, 2019, who had stepped up to light heavyweight before the fight. The fight was harsh, with both boxers clutching and striking each other during the breaks. Barrera landed clean blows throughout the fight, but despite his technical deficiencies, Hart was able to win the battle in the eyes of all three judges, collecting one knockdown in the process.

He fights Gilberto Ramirez on July 9, 2021, at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, California, United States.
