    Ajla Tomljanovic Early Life 

    Ajla Tomljanovic was born in Zagreb, Croatia, on May 7, 1993. She is one of Ratko Tomlkanovic’s two children with his wife, Emina. Her father was a handball player who won the European Cup in 1992 and 1993. Hana, her older sister, is a former University of Virginia tennis player.

    After acquiring permanent residence in Australia, Tomljanovic began competing for Australia at the 2014 US Open. She was compelled to represent Croatia at all non-Grand Slam events for the following four years until she was given Australian citizenship in January 2018, allowing her to compete in all WTA Tour events.

    Ajla Tomljanovic’s Professional Career

    Ajla Tomljanovic competed in her first professional ITF Circuit event in Mexico City in October 2008, losing in the semifinals to Estefanía Craciún. She then qualified for another ITF event in Mexico City but lost in the second round to Karolina Kosiska. Finally, she qualified for the ITF event in Boca Raton, Florida, in January 2009 but lost in the second round to Heidi El Tabakh. Tomljanovi received a wildcard for the 2009 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, but Angela Haynes defeated her.

    Tomljanovi then lost three consecutive second-round matches at ITF tournaments in Redding, California, Osprey, Florida, and Makarska, Croatia, to Rika Fujiwara, Kateřina Kramperová, and Ana Savi, respectively. Tereza Hladková defeated her in the first round of the ITF event in Zagreb. She won her first ITF doubles title in Zagreb on May 10, 2009, partnering with Croatian Petra Marti. Due to mononucleosis, Tomljanovi missed the majority of 2012.

    Despite turning professional in 2009, the Croatian tennis player did not become well-known until 2014. Ajla won an ITF doubles title in 2009 in the interim. In 2012, she was sidelined for the entire season due to mononucleosis. Tomljanovic reached the top 50 in the world rankings after reaching the second round of the Australian Open in 2014.

    She started the year by losing in the first round of the Shenzhen Open to eighth seed Annika Beck. Tomljanovi then competed in the Apia International Sydney as a wildcard. In the first round, she defeated Daniela Hantuchová, the former world No. 5. Madison Keys then beat her in three sets in the second round. Tomljanovic, ranked 67, defeated Tadeja Majerič in the first round of the Australian Open. In the second round, she didn’t win in three sets by 13th seed Sloane Stephens.

    Ajla Tomljanovic made her first WTA Tour final in 2015, but she lost. She reached the semifinals of the Japan Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open in the same year. After shoulder surgery the following season, Tomljanovic sat out the entire season. Ajla Tomljanovic’s comeback year was 2017, but she didn’t make the most of it. She went from 930th to 151st in the rankings.

    At Brisbane International, Tomljanovi began his season. Johanna Konta beat her in a first-round thriller at the Australian Open. She accelerated to the quarterfinals before losing to fifth seed Karolína Plíšková the eventual champion. Camila Giorgi defeated her in the first round of the Sydney International.

    Tomljanovi advanced to the final of the Thailand Open, where she was defeated by eighth seed Dayana Yastremska, despite leading 5–2 in the final set. Tomljanovi advanced to the first round of the Qatar Open after qualifying. She was defeated by ninth seed Julia Görges. Zheng Saisai defeated Tomljanovi in the first round of the Dubai Championships. She competed in the BNP Paribas Open in March, losing in the second round to Aryna Sabalenka, the ninth seed. Tomljanovi upset ninth seed Sabalenka in the second round of the Miami Open for her second career win over a top-ten player. Anett Kontaveit, the 21st seed, beat her in a third-round thriller.

    Ajla Tomljanovic began her 2020 season at Brisbane International, where she lost in the second round by Karolína Plková, the defending and eventual champion. Then, she was knocked out in the second round of the inaugural Adelaide International by second seed Simona Halep. After that, she lost in the second round of the Australian Open to eventual finalist Garbie Muguruza.

    Tomljanovi was defeated in the second round of the St. Petersburg Trophy by Russian qualifier Anastasia Potapova. Bethanie Mattek-Sands again defeated her defeated in the first round of qualifying at the Dubai Championships. Tomljanovic was knocked out of the Qatar Open in the second round by 11th seed Muguruza.

    Ajla has been attempting to reach the summit ever since. But, unfortunately, she missed a perfect opportunity to qualify for the next round of the Australian Open in early 2021, losing in the final set to Simona Halep.
