Robert Ryan is an American football coach for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League’s inside linebackers (NFL). Ryan has worked for seven different NFL teams as a defensive coordinator or assistant coach. During the New England Patriots Super Bowl triumphs in XXXVI and XXXVIII, he was the linebackers coach. Ryan is Buddy Ryan’s son and the twin brother of Rex Ryan. Robert Allen Ryan is his full name.

Early life

Rob and his fraternal twin, Rex, relocated to Toronto with Doris after his parents, Doris and Buddy Ryan, split in 1966. They returned to the United States in 1974 to live with their father. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois, was his alma mater.

At Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Robert Ryan played defensive end opposite his brother, Rex. In 1987, Ryan worked as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky University. He then became an assistant coach at Ohio State in 1988. After that, he coached running backs, wide receivers, and the defensive line at Tennessee State for five years.

Career

Robert Ryan began his NFL coaching career in 1994 as the defensive backs coach for his father’s Arizona Cardinals staff. In 1995, he also coached the Cardinals’ cornerbacks and safeties. Cornerback Aeneas Williams had two Pro Bowl appearances with Ryan as his position coach in 1994 and 1995. The Cardinals led the NFL in interceptions with 32 and total takeaways with 42 in 1995. In addition, the Cardinals finished second in overall defense, second in run defense, and third in pass defense in the 1994 NFL season.

Robert Ryan worked as the defensive coordinator at Hutchinson Community College in 1996 after being fired by the Arizona Cardinals. Ryan’s defense ranked first in the country in overall defense and sacks.

Ryan was named the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State in 1997. The Cowboys’ defense was consistently ranked among the best in the country while he coached at Oklahoma State, and he was voted Coordinator of the Year by The Sporting News in 1997.

In total defense, they were rated 10th in the country in 1999. With 41 sacks in 1998, they were second in the country. The Cowboys defense finished among the top-20 in the nation in turnover margin, rushing defense, scoring defense, and total defense in his first season at Oklahoma State, allowing only 302.7 yards per game.

Before the 2000 season, new Patriots coach Bill Belichick hired Ryan to be the linebackers coach, and he spent the following four seasons with the team. With 238 points allowed in 2003, the Patriots were first in the NFL in points allowed while ranking sixth in total defense.

Before the 2004 season, Robert Ryan was named as the Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator. Last season, the Raiders defense ranked 31st in the league, allowing an average of 27.6 points per game. In 2006, the Raiders ranked third in terms of yards per game but 18th in terms of points per game.

Robert Ryan was hired as a defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns by Eric Mangini on January 14, 2009. Ryan’s defense ranked 21st in league with 375 points allowed in his first season in Cleveland, with opponents averaging 23.4 points per game against them. On January 19, 2011, Ryan was named the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. Ryan agreed to join the St. Louis Rams as defensive coordinator in January 2013 but resigned less than five days later.

The Buffalo Bills announced on January 10, 2016, that Ryan would be joining his brother’s coaching team as an associate head coach. On December 27, 2016, the Bills announced that Rob Ryan and his brother Rex had been sacked.

Robert Ryan was appointed as the Washington Redskins’ inside linebackers coach on January 30, 2019. On January 5, 2020, the organization announced that Steve Russ had replaced Ryan by incoming head coach Ron Rivera. Ryan was hired as the Baltimore Ravens’ inside linebackers coach on January 22, 2021, under defensive coordinator Don Martindale and head coach John Harbaugh.

Robert Ryan is married to Kristen Ryan and has three children with her. Ryan got lap band surgery in 2012 to lose weight, following in the footsteps of his brother. The treatment, however, failed, and the band almost caused his stomach to shut down.
